Drugs and Heroin in Ohio

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

At Ohio State University there were studies done by researchers to examine bullying and substance use and abuse.  They looked at more than 74,000 students in all public, private and Catholic middle and high schools in Franklin County, Ohio, which includes Columbus.  Some of the facts they came up with was that about 30 percent of middle school students and 23 percent of high school students were thought of as being bullies, bully victims or both, called a bully-victim.  More interesting information is that substance use was defined as smoking, drinking, or using marijuana at least once a month.  Fewer than 5 percent of middle school students reported substance use.  When they looked at high school students they found 32 percent drank alcohol, 14 percent smoked cigarettes and 16 percent used marijuana.  So they did find a link between bullying involvement and substance use.  Here are some more statistics.  Marijuana use was reported by only 1.6 percent of middle school students not involved in bullying, compared with 11.4 percent of bullies, 6.1 percent of bully-victim and 2.4 percent of victims.  Marijuana use was reported by 13.3 percent of high school students not involved in bullying, compared with 31.7 percent of bullies, 29.2 percent of bully-victims, and 16.6 percent of victims.  When they looked at alcohol and cigarette use the results were the same as with marijuana.  This was according to the study in the April issue of Addictive Behavior.  Kisha Radliff, lead author and an assistant professor of school psychology said, “Our findings suggest that one deviant behavior may be related to another.  For example, youth who bully others might be more likely to also try substance use.  The reverse could also be true in that youth who use substances might be more likely to bully others.”

This all adds up to when young people do drugs their behavior changes and it could account for what is going on in America right now with bullying.  If you know someone who wants or needs help to get off drugs get them to an inpatient treatment center where they can get a safe and natural way to detox and withdraw.  There is a place like that.  Something can be done about it.
